Missoula County Sheriff’s race: Clark will do the ‘right thing’

Author:Jonathan Stineford ComeFrom:Missoula Date:2014/10/20 20:41:40 Hits:2062
Years ago a man I much respect gave me a challenge coin. The inscription reads, “Strive always to do the right thing at the right time in the right manner for the right reasons.” Around the same time, the same man gave the same coin to candidate for Missoula County Sheriff T.J. McDermott. When McDermott was not selected for promotion within the Sheriff’s Department, McDermott returned the challenge coin.

This is the essence of McDermott. He is a man who has never given more of himself to his department than the minimum. He has never accepted collateral duties like deputy coroner, Search and Rescue, Special Response Team, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, field training officer, senior operator or cadet coordinator. It’s not hard to see why a man who was never willing to give extra of himself was never promoted past sergeant.

This simply comes down to who we as Missoulians think will best serve us as sheriff. I’ve had the opportunity to work with and observe both McDermott and Josh Clark. For me the issue comes down to trust. More than that, it’s about “public trust” and “public service.”

Clark has my trust and a record of service to this community and to the Sheriff’s Department well above the bare minimum. I trust Clark to make the decisions for our department. I trust Clark and would be willing have him as my partner on a dangerous call. I cannot say the same for McDermott. Clark believes in doing the “right thing” even when no one is looking. McDermott has never been interested in service and, in returning the challenge coin, it is apparent that he is not interested in doing the “right thing,” rather, whatever the right thing is for McDermott.

It is time for us as Missoulians to stand up for what is right. Please write in Josh Clark for sheriff and fill in the oval next to his name.
