The city is turning 100 next year, and city officials want to celebrate the birthday with a bang.
At a workshop this week, city staff, city commissioners and local groups discussed the city's centennial, which is June 29, 2015, and the activities they want to include in 2015.
The city has allocated $15,000 in the annual budget for any celebrations, said City Manager Ryan Leavengood.
"We want to look at input from all our member organizations," he said. "It's going to be a team effort for us to successfully pull off a centennial."
The workshop group discussed developing a centennial logo and producing accessories commemorating the birthday, like apparel, lapel pins, flags and badges for police and fire employees.
They also suggested having a parade, making a time capsule, working with local ministries to put on a heritage day and making plaques for historical buildings.
Leavengood, who used to be assistant to the city manager in Auburndale, said he was in charge of organizing the time capsule during Auburndale's centennial and that it was an opportunity to involve the entire community in the process.
Commissioners discussed at their June meeting adopting a resolution to proclaim 2015 as Lake Alfred's centennial year and asking the Polk County Commission to make a similar proclamation.
The group suggested all Lake Alfred events next year should have a centennial spin to them and that activities, like a historical scavenger hunt or tour, could be held throughout 2015.
Leavengood said he will send out a calendar to community members with ideas the workshop group generated. The commission will discuss decisions on centennial events at their meeting on Monday.
