Brooks: Army comedy owns up to gaffes

Author:Drew Brooks ComeFrom:fayobserver.com Date:2014/1/14 2:43:19 Hits:1631
The makers of "Enlisted," the new comedy on Fox that premieres Friday, know they messed up.
In their efforts to depict military life in a show billed as a workplace comedy set on a small, fictional Army post, they made a few mistakes that could irk a military-savvy audience.
Kevin Biegel, the show's creator, doesn't shy away from those mistakes - he embraces them and promises to do better.
Biegel has pledged that the show has cleaned up its act - and the facial stubble and long hair - for all of the episodes following the pilot, which premieres at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 10.
As for that pilot, Biegel is hoping viewers who know better will forgive the show and stick around for more episodes.
As a show of good faith, the show is offering challenge coins to viewers who watch the pilot and send in a list of the show's mistakes.
In a video announcing the contest, show star Geoff Stults, who plays Staff Sgt. Pete Hill, points out some of the more obvious mistakes from commercials promoting the comedy and shows the coin, which bears the alligator logo and "Yes, we're soldiers" motto of the fictional Fort McGee, Fla.
Biegel has said that, although the show is a comedy, it's important to those who work on "Enlisted" to get things right.
To that end, the show has brought on veterans to consult on shows and to make sure little details stay true to military life.
Biegel also said the show is using veterans as extras and in other jobs as much as possible.
The show will tackle serious issues, he said, and aims to be an homage to military life.
In the meantime, he's hoping the pilot's goofs won't drive away the audience the show wants to honor.
