Bonnie Glerup of Morris remembers wanting to be a nurse since she was 3 years old. Glerup was selected as Morris Hospital’s November Fire Starter of the Month for being an outstanding nurse who has evolved into a leader and mentor to those she works with, according to a news release from the hospital.

Born at Morris Hospital to parents who were both raised in Morris, Glerup is a graduate of Dwight High School. She started working at Morris Hospital in 1997 as a CNA. She continued working while she was attending Joliet Junior College for her RN degree and her BSN at Benedictine University.

“It’s a good feeling to come to work when you have a great team to work with,” Glerup said in the news release. “That makes a big difference in our line of work.”

Morris Hospital 2 South Manager Cheryl Wallin said she is comfortable leaving Glerup in charge on the midnight shift.

“Bonnie always remains professional and has a way of keeping everything calm,” Wallin said in the news release.

“She is a wonderful clinical resource for staff when she’s on duty and is always checking with staff to see if they have any questions or need any help. She’s a huge advocate for staff and for patients.”

One of Glerup’s unique trademarks is her whistle, as she can be heard quietly whistling or humming as she goes about her work. She said the most rewarding part of her job is taking care of her patients, and has developed a special fondness for caring for seniors.

Glerup was touched when a 92-year-old patient recently told her she reminded him of his mother.

“He said his mother was always whistling, and then he asked me if I could whistle ‘Amazing Grace,’ ” Glerup said. “So I started whistling it while I was putting in his IV. He sang along.”

In early civilizations, fire starters were the individuals who kept the flame alive. As Fire Starter of the Month, Glerup received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a special “Fire Starter” lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month.
